Bronze Statues and SculpturesA popular item for home or office decor are collectible bronze statues. Bronze statuary are typically duplicates of sculptures, often smaller versions of larger works.

Bronze sculptures vary in size, from small items about the size of a paperweight to very large pieces that can weigh hundreds of pounds and act as a central focus of a room.

Bronze sculptures are almost always cast from molds made of the original work. One common method is the lost wax process where a mold is made of a sculpture. From this molded negative a wax positive is cast. This positive is then coated in a material that can withstand the heat and pressure of molten bronze. Once the mold has hardened around the wax, the wax is melted away in an oven leaving a perfect copy in the mold material.

When cast, bronze will expand slightly when the molten alloy is poured, filling in the tiniest details, and then shrink slightly as it cools. This allows the mold to be removed once the bronze sculpture has fully solidified.

Bronze alloys vary in color, but are mostly comprised of copper and tin. Bronze statuary are usually chemically treated to create an aesthetically pleasing patina which also serves to preserve the statue from corrosion.

Bronze statues can be looked at in two broad categories. Limited edition statues are signed and numbered by the artist, and usually are of greater value than unlimited production runs. Like any other collectible, values are determined by a wide variety of factors, including the artist, subject matter, rarity and condition.
